Cooperation for Development
The Italian Government has granted an amount of approximately US$ 900,000 for the project - implemented by the NGO "IBO" of Bologna - to develop the Don Bosco technical centre in Negombo. This grant has been utilized to buy equipment for professional training of poor youth at risk, to rehabilitate and provide them with employment.
In 1997 the Italian Government contributed approximately with US$ 650,000 to the "International Committee of the Red Cross" for humanitarian activities in Sri Lanka.
In May 2001 the Italian Government contributed with approximately US$ 500.000 to UNICEF for the programme regarding children and women in the Srilankan armed conflict.
In the year 2002 the Italian Government contributed with 500.000 Euro to UNDP for the programme against mines (demining and mines-awareness).
In June 2003, at the Tokyo Pledging Conference the Italian Government announced a pledge of 1 million Euro, following the previous one of 2 million Euro announced at the Oslo Conference in 2002, for a total pledging of 3 million Euro.
Sri Lanka - Italy Friendship Association
The "Sri Lanka - Italy Friendship Association" has been established in Colombo in March 1999, in order to develop the cultural relationship between the two countries. At this initiative more than thirty representatives from the local media and cultural circle took part and from time on many social and cultural events have taken place .
